Two States is a hit: Chetan Bhagat’s ‘real’ stories work in India

Chetan Bhagat’s Hindi movies have had a high success rate. With the positive response to “2 States”, it seems that he is establishing his place in the Bollywood circuit.

According to the Business Standard, Two States has collected Rs 60.77 crore in its opening week, the highest this year after Salman Khan’s Jai Ho that collected Rs 87 crore. After Kai Po Che in 2009 and Three Idiots last year, this is the third adaptation. Maybe a line from the movie, which translates to “I want to tell stories that are true”, explains it all, at least for Indian movie-goers.

“My greatest strength is the silent support of my readers. It was displayed to the nation today. We are grateful for your amazing opening. Bhagat had tweeted “2 States”, the day that “2 States” was released to theatres in India.

Based on his bestseller, “2 States:The Story Of My Marriage”, the movie tells the story of a couple who come from two different Indian countries. It became a huge hit in 2009.

The book was said to have been inspired by the true-life story of a north Indian author and his wife, who hails from Tamil Nadu. It has a strong connection with both youth and older people. The movie is apparently proving to be a hit with all age groups, and has managed to collect more than Rs.12 crore on its opening day – a “commendable” amount according to trade analysts.

Arjun Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Alia Khan are the two young actors who were cast in these roles. The two actors, like many others their age have their memories attached.

Alia had already read the book before it was being made into a movie and thought it was “beautiful”. Arjun said that the bestseller still occupies a place on his mother Mona Shourie Kapoor’s bookshelf.

People of all ages, from 16 to 60, are coming to the cinemas to see the film about two states and one love story.

It has been loved by celebrities.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan commented on the movie saying: “2 States ‘… I like. Every aspect is perfect – music, writing, directing and performances.

Vivek Oberoi, actor tweeted: “In my view Chetan Bhagat has been the most successful contemporary Indian writer of all time!” His fan base is immense. His communication skills are exceptional, especially with young people.

It’s no surprise then, that Bhagat’s dance with Bollywood is only getting better with each novel made into a movie.

“2 States” is his fourth work to be made into a movie.

Two films managed to make a big box office hit: “3 idiots”, based on “Five Point Someone” and “Kai Po Che!” (“The 3 Mistakes Of My Life”) while “Hello”, based on his “One Night @ The Call Center” received a poor reception.

However, “Kai Po Che!” was a huge success. It was only natural that viewers and readers had high expectations for the Abhishek Varman-directed 2 States.

Bhagat is one of the few authors who has been continually chosen by filmmakers to be on the big screen in these times of remakes and sequels.

It also works in his favor!

In a recent interview, Bhagat stated that he likes to reach more Indians and that movies are a great way to do this. The more people I have, the more likely they will read my nonfiction columns on national topics or be interested in what I have to say.
