Trinamool Congress -TMC(TMC full form)

Mamata Banerjee founded the All India Trinamool Congress on January 1, 1998. Mamata Banerjee was a Congress member for more than 26 years. She formed her own party in West Bengal, and was given the ‘jora gahas phul,’ the exclusive symbol of the party. TMC won seven Lok Sabha seats in 1998. TMC won eight seats in 1999 with BJP. 

TMC won 60 West Bengal Legislative seats in 2001 with the support Congress. In 2006, TMC won 30 seats in West Bengal with BJP. TMC won 19 Bengali seats in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections.

Mamata Banerjee’s slogan ‘Ma Mati Manush,’ which translates to ‘Mother, Motherland, and People’, was very popular among West Bengali voters during the 2011 Assembly elections. People voted in 2011 for political change, ending 34 years of Left rule. This change was brought about by the TMC and Congress alliance.

Mamata Banerjee resigned her support for the UPA in 2012 over the rise of diesel prices and FDI in retail.

These were just some of the key direct measures that TMC used to win this decisive victory.

After its expansion in Manipur and Odisha, Kerala (Odisha), Sikkim, Arunachal Pradeshs, Haryana, Assam, Tripura, and Sikkim in 2016, the party has been granted National Party status.

The TMC won 34 of 42 state seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. However, it was defeated by the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2019, which made inroads into West Bengal. Its total number of seats was 22.

Ms Mamata Banerjee was born in Kolkata. She is the Hon’ble Chief Minister for West Bengal and Chairperson of All India Trinamool Congress.

Her father was a freedom fighter, and her mother, who supported her family through all the ups and downs of life, instilled in her the spirit fair play, deep empathy for all people and the courage to stand up for the poor. These values have been her guiding force and she has taken on the most challenging tasks and challenges.

Ms. Banerjee has Bachelor degrees in Arts, Education (B.Ed), Law and Arts (LLB), as well as a Masters in Arts (MA).

Ms. Banerjee was a student at Jogmaya Debi College when she was inducted into the West Bengal Chhatra Parishad. She also served as a member of its Working Committee between 1977 and 1983.

Between 1979 and 1980, she was the General Secretary of West Bengal Congress (Indira). She also served as Secretary to West Bengal Provincial Trade Union Congress. She was Secretary to the Women’s Wing, Indian National Trade Union Congress, and South Calcutta District Congress (Indira), for the period 1983-1988.

In 1984, she was elected a Member from Jadavpur Constituency. She held the position of General Secretary of Indira Youth Congress (Indira). In 1987, she became a member the National Council and in 1988, a member the Executive Committee of Congress Parliamentary Party.

She was reelected as a Member in Parliament from South Kolkata Parliamentary Constituency in 1991, 1998, 1999 and 2004. This makes her one of India’s most knowledgeable Parliamentarians.

She was a member of many Parliamentary Committees and was appointed Minister of State, Government of India, Youth and Sports, Women and Child Development, in 1991. In 1999, she was elected Railway Minister of India and in 2004, Cabinet Minister for Coal and Mines. She was reappointed Railway Minister in 2009. The 34-year-old regime was ended by the All India Trinamool Congress in a historic victory. Ms. Banerjee became the first woman Chief Minister for West Bengal on May 20.

Despite her busy schedule, she managed to write over 20 books and create over 5000 oil paintings. Some of these have been sold. She donated the proceeds to various social and developmental causes.

The All India Trinamool Congress (AITMC), also known as the Trinamool Congress, was founded by Mamata Banerjee in January 1998. It is a National political party. After the 34-year rule of CPIM, the Communist Party of India(Marxist), or CPIM, it has formed the current government in Vidhan Sabha elections 2011. The AITMC, a separatist faction of the Indian National Congress has a center-left political position and political ideologies that favor secularism or populism.

Mamata Banerjee is the founder of AITMC. Banerjee, who was a Congress member for over 20 years, formed her own party in 1998. This was approved by the Election Commission of India. AITMC joined the BJP in the NDA coalition at Centre in 1999. Mamata Banerjee received the Ministry of Railways under the NDA regime. However, she resigned quickly after having split from the NDA. 

The AITMC aligned itself with Congress in the UPA coalition in 2009’s general elections. The Congress-led UPA government’s “anti-people” policies, such as introducing FDI into the retail sector, disinvestment in profit-making PSUs, and raising the price of diesel in September 2012, led to the AITMC cutting ties with Congress.

The Election Symbol and Its Significance

According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the Election Symbol of AITMC is the “twin flower in grass”. This unique symbol is known in West Bengal as Jora Ghas Pul, which means “grass and two flowers”. It carries all the colours of India’s flag and the political slogan ‘Ma Maati Manush (Mother Motherland and People), highlights its importance.

 The AITMC symbol for the flowers and the grass is representative of our nation, the motherhood, or the country. Here, the’maati’ (or’motherland) refers to mother or a ‘Ma. People who live on the motherland’s land are called “manush”. A political party, the AITMC, is for the poor and marginalized sections of society. In 2011, the AITMC’s war cry became the political slogan. The symbol’s simple flower design indicates that the AITMC supports those parts of society that are marginalized and oppressed.

AIAITMC’s achievements

The AITMC is a political party at the state level that has achieved many achievements. These achievements are listed below.

  • A number of frontal organizations are under the AITMC banner. Trinamool Chhatra Parishad, its student wing, is a dominant presence in many colleges and universities in Bengal. Its youth wing, called All India Trinamool Yuva is its women’s wing called All India Mahila Trinamool Congress. The labour wing of the organization is Indian National Trinamool Trade Union Congress.
  • AITMC was a key player in the 2006 protests in Nandigram, Singur, where Mamata Banerjee and many intellectuals marched to protest the firing of CPM government officials on farmers and peasants in the area. She was a key part of the Bhoomi Uchched Proptirodh committee (BUPC), which protested against CPIM’s land-grabbing, eviction and industrialization policies.
  • A majority of seats were won by the AITMC in the 2013 Panchayat elections.
  • AITMC claims that it has made it possible for poor people to get government jobs, created policies for so-called minorities and resolved the Maoist problem in the country. The CM recently declared significant beneficiary policies to the family’s girl child through its ‘Kanyashree” scheme.
