RSA: RSA is for Rivest Shamir, Adleman. They are the inventors and maintainers of public-key encryption technology. It is a public key cryptosystem for secure data transmission. It is used for sensitive data transmission, particularly when data is transferred over the Internet.

This public key encryption technology developed by RSA Data Security Inc. Encrypting a message means that code is added to the message which converts it into a random mess. The RSA algorithm is based on the difficulty involved in the factorization of large numbers. The RSA algorithm is based on the fact that there is no efficient way to factor very large numbers. So, deducing an RSA key would take a huge amount of time and processing power.

The RSA algorithm is an asymmetric cryptography algorithm because it uses two different keys: a public key and a private key. The public key is accessible to everyone while the private key remains secret. Two numbers are part of the public key. One of them is a multiplication from two large prime numbers.

Additionally, the private key is also generated from the same prime numbers. Therefore, the private key cannot be compromised unless the large numbers are factored into the equation. This is difficult. The strength of encryption is dependent on key size. Large keys are more secure. RSA keys may be either 1024 bits or 2048 bits in length.
