MegaByte (MB), is a unit for digital information or computer storage. Mega Byte, which can be translated to 1000000 or 106, is a unit of digital information or computer storage. However, the terms MegaByte and mega- have been used historically to mean either 106 or 220 bytes depending on the context in the field of computer science or information technology.
What’s the difference between Megabits or Megabytes?
What is the difference in a megabit from a megabyte? Computer people know the answer: it’s “a factor eight”, since there are eight bits within a single megabyte. There’s more to the question, however, including how data is moved, stored and the history of computing.
What are Megabits?
When talking about internet speed, “Megabit” is the term we most commonly use. Megabits per second (or Mbps) is a measure of data transfer speed. One million bits per second is 1 Mbps.
Consider internet service providers as an example. Over the (MB FULL FORM)years, my cable provider has increased my maximum download speed by 25 to 75 to 150 Mb/s. Fiber optic connections (Verizon’s FiOS, Google Fiber), can be faster if you have the right service.
What is a Megabyte?
“Megabyte” is a measurement most often used to describe both hard drive space and memory storage capacity, though the term of art we throw around most frequently these days is the next order of magnitude, the gigabyte (GB). For example, my computer has 8GB RAM and 512GB storage.
How to Measure Megabits & Megabytes
Bits are a single piece or information. They can be expressed in binary 0 and 1. A bit is a unit of data that has eight digits in length. It is called a byte. Kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes, petabytes–each unit of measurement is 1,000 times the size before it.
Why is network bandwidth measured in megabits and storage measured in megabytes. There are many theories and explanations. Although I don’t have a clear answer, networking engineers seem to agree that a bit is the lowest common factor. This is the smallest unit of measurement you can use to understand the speed of network transfers. It’s bits per second. It is like measuring the flow of your plumbing.
As to why data is assembled in bytes, Wikipedia cites the popularity of IBM’s System/360 as one likely reason: The computer used a then-novel 8-bit data format. IBM was the first to define computing, and it is still the standard for engineers today. An old marketing saying was that “No one ever got fired because they bought IBM.”
Plausible? Yes. But is it the only reason? Wikipedia is the authoritative source. There will be a lot more conjecture than hard answers if there is no other source.
This means that aliens are involved in all of it, at least as far as my knowledge.
What does it all mean?
Here we are today with the following delineation: Bandwidth can be measured in bits and storage capacity is in bytes. It’s simple, but confusing when you mix them. If your upload speed on your network is 8 Mbps, then the maximum data you can upload per second is 1MB. As you observe how fast data moves across your network or the internet, keep in mind the difference between megabits and megabytes.
