Lymphocytes are a type of white blood cell. They help your body’s immune system fight cancer and foreign viruses and bacteria. Your lymphocyte count can be taken during a normal blood test at your healthcare provider’s office. Lymphocyte levels vary depending on your age, race, sex, altitude and lifestyle.
What happens if lymphocytes count is high?
If your doctor finds that your lymphocyte count is high, the test result could be an indication of one of the following conditions: an infection (bacterial, viral, or other), a cancer of the blood or lymphatic system, or an autoimmune disorder causing ongoing (chronic) inflammation. Make sure to speak with your doctor to determine the most appropriate course of action for you.
What does it mean if your lymphocytes are low?
If you have low numbers of lymphocytes (lymphopenia), you are at higher risk of infection. Lymphopenia symptoms can range from mild to serious and are correlated to the severity of the lymphopenia as well as its duration. Some people have no symptoms.
