Our founders chose to call it ISO because International Organization for Standardization would have different acronyms for different languages (IOS in English for International Organization for Standardization ), and OIN in French for Organisation Internationale denormalization

OUR STORY BEGINS IN 1946

In 1946, 65 representatives from 25 countries gather in London to discuss future international standardization. With 67 technical committees, which are groups of experts that focus on a particular subject, ISO is officially established in 1947.

Since its inception, ISO has published monthly information on its technical committees and the standards they have published.

ISO members meet in Stockholm to attend the 3rd General Assembly in 1955. ISO had 35 members at the start of 1955 and 68 standards (called suggestions). Henry St Leger serves as the Secretary-General.ISO 31 is a standard on quantities and units published in 1960. It has since been replaced with ISO 80 000.
ISO 31 is based upon SI (Systeme international d’unites). SI is a unit that defines each quantity. For example, the SI provides one unit for distance, and another for time. The SI system aims to achieve worldwide uniformity of units of measurement the 1960s, ISO began to include more countries in its International Standardization efforts.
It established DEVCO in 1961, a committee to assist developing countries, and introduced Correspondent membership in 1968. This allows developing countries to be kept informed about International Standardization activities without having to pay the full cost of ISO membership.

International focus

In the 1970s, ISO’s Secretary-General Olle Sturen focused on making ISO a truly international organization.
Although ISO members are from all parts of the globe, only a few were fully involved in the development and implementation of International Standards in the early 1970s.
